Our Services
Historically Informed Piano Restoration/Conservation
This service is for those who have a piano of their own that they would like to have restored, whether it is a family heirloom to preserve for in home enjoyment, or an instrument intended for the concert stage we take on projects of all types and treat each instrument with our full attention. We strive in our restorations to respect the original intent of the maker and to preserve the authentic sound of the instrument. This is achieved by working almost solely in an 18th and 19th century paradigm. Most of the tools, techniques, and materials used in the workshop are based in historical practice. Every original part that can be preserved is meticulously restored and where they are missing or too damaged to be put into optimal playing condition they are replaced with accurate reproductions. Original soundboards are always retained as this is the soul of the instrument and defines the tone quality and resonance in most cases more than any other part of the design. Restoration typically takes anywhere from 3 to 6 months from the start to finish, depending on the details of the project. Please contact us for pricing, terms of contract, and other questions concerning our process.
Historic Piano Leather Sales and Consultation
The workshop often has various types of historic leathers made specifically for use in pianos and other keyboard instruments. Our tannery is the only tannery worldwide with a specific focus on historically accurate piano leathers and is the culmination of more than ten years of research. We offer consultation to owners and builders regarding selection and use of these leathers for optimal tone and performance. Our leathers are featured on instruments throughout the United States and Europe in museums, universities, cathedrals and private homes. The square piano located in George Washingtons estate was restored using our leathers.
Piano Tuning and Service
We also offer tuning and repairs for pianos and harpsichords in the Pittsburgh and surrounding area. My basic tuning fee is $250 and $300 for first time customer service, which includes inspection, basic cleaning, pitch adjustment and tuning. (add PA sales tax if applicable)
